On Thursday, 20-year-old Alexander Jerich was arrested after purposefully making skidmarks on a newly-completed, LGBTQ rainbow crosswalk, a piece of “artwork,” in Delray Beach, Fla. Jerich was officially “charged Thursday with criminal mischief over $1,000, reckless driving and evidence of prejudice (felony enhancement).”
But, there are a couple of buried ledes here. The first is that this artwork cost $16,000. The second is that Jerich could be the first person arrested for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's anti-looting and vandalism law.
Here's the video with his pickup truck and Trump Train flag-waving:

But, according to the Palm Beach Post, that crosswalk was “$16,000 street art, paid for by the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC) and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, features the traditional rainbow colors for gay, lesbian and bisexual pride, plus a few more: pink, white and blue for transgender people, and black and brown for people of color in the community.”
So, for the eight groups mentioned, it apparently costs $2,000 per stripe. What is this? Paint made out of gold? Well, whatever it costs, it seems Delray Beach got screwed over on the pricing. The neighboring town of Boynton Beach has a gay pride crosswalk that cost only $12,000.
Now, the crosswalk was a gift, so it wasn't taxpayer money. But, where is the cost justification for this expense?
Regardless of the ludicrous cost, remember the left's meltdown over Gov. Ron DeSantis' recently passed law that the left said was racist? Well, it's that law specifically that Jerich was charged with violating. The official name for the law is the “Combating Public Disorder Law.”
While that bill was being debated, the Florida ACLU said it “chills speech, silences dissent, and criminalizes peaceful protesters advocating for racial justice.” But now, leftist groups like the PBCHRC wants the apparent Trump supporter charged to the fullest extent of the law.
“PBCHRC has requested the charges include defacing a memorial – a recently enacted law which would require this crime to be treated as a felony,” Rand Hoch, the Human Rights Council's president and founder said in a statement, “If convicted of this offense, the perpetrator would be responsible for reimbursing the City of Delray Beach for the cost of repairing the damages, in addition, the severe penalties for committing a felony.”
Let's leave it to the justice system in Florida to decide what punishment is necessary for Jerich. Will Florida's ACLU come to his defense? I doubt it.
But, as the pantheon of genders and sexual orientation keeps changing, as well as the multitude of apparently marginalized races, do we need to expect a new stripe added each year? Remember, it's already $2,000 per stripe, as of now. But with inflation, that's only going to skyrocket.
