We've written extensively on the White House's defensive floundering on the issue of settlement payments to illegal immigrants to the tune of $450,000/person, which began with President Biden's “garbage” answer to Fox News reporter Peter Doocy when asked about the Wall Street Journal report that claimed the DOJ, “Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments” to families that were allegedly separated under the Trump administration and who had filed lawsuits, and continuing into the weekend with Biden yelling at another reporter for asking about it.
Because Biden is notoriously bad at what he does, journalists have to rely heavily on the White House press office to play “clean up” and “translator” for Biden, which, to be quite honest is not that much better. White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre – who is subbing for a COVID-stricken Jen Psaki – tried to do so twice last week in regards to this matter, unsuccessfully both times.
In the first instance, which we documented, Jean-Pierre completely undercut Biden's comments when asked about them by Doocy during the Thursday daily press briefing, telling him that Biden was “perfectly comfortable” with settlement payments while attempting to clarify that what Biden was saying was “garbage” was the amount reported by the WSJ ($450,000).
But in another exchange between Doocy and Jean-Pierre the following day that flew under the radar, Doocy turned the tables on the press secretary by asking her why the White House wasn't considering offering payments to those who came here legally. The question confused Jean-Pierre, even after Doocy followed up by insinuating that if they were going to pay people to come here illegally, why not pay the ones who came here legally, too?
Doocy: There is a long line to get into this country legally. Is there any kind of discussion about giving people who are coming here the right way money?
Jean-Pierre: Why would — I — why would we be giving people who are coming here the right way money?
Doocy: Why are you giving people who came here the wrong way money?
Jean-Pierre: I mean, but I don't understand the question. What is — you're saying that we should give —
Doocy: You're giving illegal immigrants —
Jean-Pierre: — we should give people just money who are coming through? I don't understand the question.
Doocy: You're giving people who immigrated here illegally money. You will.
Jean-Pierre: Like I said — like I said, that's the Department of Justice. That's — you're going to have to ask them that question.
Doocy: Okay. We'll ask again.

For this question, Doocy was awarded with the “thug life” distinction, which you may recall was previously awarded to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) during the contentious 2018 Supreme Court confirmation hearings for then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh:

All kidding aside, it was the perfect question, and one this White House should have been able to provide an answer to. I mean, seriously – if you're going to give hundreds of thousands of dollars in U.S. taxpayer dollars to people who came here illegally, why not pay people are spending their hard-earned money and time trying to do it the right way? What the United States is doing here in effect is negotiating to reward bad behavior, which will encourage more illegal immigrants to follow-suit.
For a White House that claims they want to stop the crush of illegal immigrants at the border in part due to the COVID crisis, they sure as hell are doing a lousy job at showing it. Par for the course for this clown show, with the leader of the free world continuing to be asleep at the wheel while his handlers struggle to keep the ship afloat, failing miserably.
2022 midterms, hurry up – please.
