A little over a week ago, hysteria broke out on the left after news dropped that Gov. Ron DeSantis was looking to reinstate the Florida State Guard. Allegations flowed that DeSantis was starting his own “militia” in order to act as “Trump's red army.”
That evening, MSNBC's Joy Reid took to the air to deliver this deluded segment in which she proclaimed the Florida governor an authoritarian as Florida AG Commissioner (and prospective DeSantis opponent in 2022) Nikki Fried nodded along.

But then something weird happened. Left-wing comedian and actor Sarah Silverman, seemingly unprompted, responded to Joy Reid on Twitter by…correcting her false allegations.

The backlash was swift, with Silverman being accused of racism for daring to point out that Joy Reid is a lunatic who lies. The former addressed the controversy on her podcast, decrying the effort to silence her for simply valuing the truth.
“We can't even critique anyone in your own party without punishment,” Silverman said. “One of the hosts of The View was like, ‘What hubris for Sarah Silverman to accuse a Black woman of not reading,' Oy! Jesus H. – What the f- I f–ing surrender! I cannot believe I need to say this, but I did not criticize Joy-Ann because she's Black, but because she's a Harvard-educated journalist with the responsibility ideally of showing the whole picture and not just a piece of a picture.”
Silverman has also drawn flack recently for her more right-wing views on cancel culture, noting that it only pushes people further into their isolated circles and discourages debate.
The question is, did she learn something from this latest dust-up with Reid? I think she did, though, I don't believe she'll ever quite admit it.

“And good grief! You dare criticize anything in your own party, you're the enemy. And that kind of black and white thinking on both sides… it's such a turn-off to me. That ‘you're either with us or against us' kind of vibe with no room for questions or critique- it feels very not liberal to me. It feels like right-wingish,” she added.
In reality, it's actually not “right-wingish” at all to demand total conformity. Those on the right tolerate a far greater breadth of opinion than those on the left, with the latter not only holding strictly illiberal views but also seeking to destroy those who refuse to fall in line.
And deep down, I think Silverman gets that. She's not stupid, but the costs are just too high for these Hollywood dwellers to actually get fully red-pilled. Instead, you see them dance them around the point, making it obvious that something is clinking around in their heads. But that they are just too scared to be direct about it.
So did Sarah Silverman learn a lesson here? She'll never admit it, but I think, on some level, she did. Regardless of her hedging, she gets what's happening and doesn't like a lot of what she's seeing from her own side. Perhaps one day she'll get the courage to fully call it out without qualifiers.
