Russia Attacks Ukrainian School, 60 Feared Dead

Ukraine claims that the Russian airstrike that destroyed a school on a Saturday claimed the lives of at least sixty people sheltered within. Ukraine deems it a “brutal war crime”:

The attack took place in the small town of Bilohorivka in which around 90 civilians were believed to have been hiding. Newsweek states:

Serhiy Haidai, Governor of the Luhansk region, stated that 90 people were sheltered in the basement of the school when the building was struck. The building was hit by a bomb dropped from an aircraft, not by a shell.

In an article on Telegram with images of the destruction, Haidai said “almost the entire village was hiding” in the basement of the school.

Russian shelling also killed two boys between 11 and 14 in the town nearby in Pryvillia, Haidai wrote in the blog post.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has been informing citizens that violence will likely increase prior to the Russian Victory Day holiday, which is a celebration of the surrender of Nazi Germany. Zelensky was insistent that Russia would be looking for some sort of military feat to mark the day. It's unclear how this kind of devastation by blowing up a crowd of civilians could help this goal, yet Putin's brain is a mystery, and murderous.

Ukraine participated with the Soviet Union in World War Two. On Sunday, Victory Day, Zelensky grew emotional:

“The darkness is back in Ukraine years in the aftermath of World War Two… The evil is back. It's just a different way with different slogans but with the same intent…”

“A bloody reenactment of Nazism is being staged. An egregious imitation of the Nazi regime. Its actions, ideas, words, symbols and language…”

“We'll conquer everything. We know this for certain, as our army and all our citizens are descendents of those who defeated Nazism”.

The news of the attack was announced on the same day that the first lady Jill Biden made a surprise trip to Ukraine to celebrate Mother's Day, sitting down with Ukraine's first lady Olena Zelenska. Biden said:

I was hoping to attend Mother's Day. I believed it was crucial to let the Ukrainian people know that the war must end and that this war is brutal. It's important to show that the citizens of the United States stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The NY Post reports that Zelenska and her kids have remained at a distance since it became evident that Putin's plan was to get Zelensky and his relatives killed.

The attack on the school is the latest tragedy of the war that has claimed many lives, and countless suffering. On March 24, NATO officials estimated that there were between 7,500 and 15,000 Russian military deaths. Ukraine officials have claimed that the true number is around 15,000.

The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner reported that, as of March 23rd, 1,035 Ukrainians died and 1650 were injured.

It's possible that we won’t have an exact count of casualties for a long time yet, no matter the numbers it's a sad state. Zelensky was right, evil is back.
