As RedState announced on Tuesday, the United States has now had more than two million detentions of illegal immigrants at the Southern border during the fiscal year currently in session. This is the highest number in recent history and is a serious problem, both for the authorities responsible for enforcing the law and those who break the law.
Given the current situation, one would think that the Biden administration is trying to make better decisions and offer some form of protection at the borders. In reality, what's happening is a major political issue and is increasing in prominence with each passing day.
However, there's a rumor that the White House is gnashing its teeth over Fox News reporter Bill Melugin who has become one of the primary resources for information on the border crisis currently in play. They aren't looking to solve the issue, they simply would like you to be unaware of it.
Per the White House:
“Immigration has been an important issue that has occupied numerous hours of programming on Fox News since its inception. Fox News regularly sends its staff at the border to cover border crossings that are illegal, and stoking anxieties about the influx of migrants. The news is usually coupled with stories of criminal acts committed, despite research that shows immigrants are at the least inclined to commit such crimes.”
Everything in these two paragraphs is mind-numbing. “Stoking fears about caravans of immigrants?” It's true that 2 million illegal immigrants have been spotted in the border area this year but that's not counting those who have made it through the border without incident. What is “stoking fears” when those fears are based on fact and sensible?
In regards to the notion that illegal immigrants commit crimes in a lesser amount, it's a questionable assumption since all studies on the subject are conducted by pro-immigration associations. Also, it's irrelevant. Every criminal act caused by an unlawful immigrant is, by definition, a crime that is preventable because they shouldn't have been permitted to enter this country in the first place. Even beyond that, the fact that illegals may be a bit more docile than some Americans does not justify crossing borders illegally. It's an insanity-driven argument.
Melugin, for his part, simply reports on details on the ground. If the news seems sensationalized it's because what's happening in the Border Zone is extremely exciting. But, the children in Biden's administration are “irritated” that he'd dare to expose their blunders.
As Melugin is an increasingly visible face for the channel, his reporting has attracted notice from officials at the White House which has become increasingly angry with his coverage. In a press conference last week, Press Secretary KARINE JEAN-PIERRE stated she was pleased that Fox News got the news about Martha's Vineyard before local news and federal and state agencies.
“The fact that Fox News — and not the Department of Homeland Security, the city, or local NGOs — were alerted about a plan to leave migrants, including children, on the side of a busy D.C. street makes clear that this is just a cruel, premeditated political stunt,” she added.
One official in the administration who was involved in immigration issues has told West Wing Playbook that the Biden team has expressed displeasure over the lack of subtlety in the coverage of the subject that is focused on the amount of people who are migrant rather than focusing on the fundamental causes. A senior administration official believes that the conservative network increases the coverage of immigration whenever there's bad news for conservatives in the media.
Why would DeSantis allow the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for a large part of this mess, to know about what was happening? However, the notion that Melugin isn't talking sufficiently about “root causes” is a weak argument. What are the “root causes” of the present crisis is caused by the Biden Administration's policy, particularly the resending of an email titled “Remain in Mexico” as well as the President's unrestricted invitation to illegal immigrants in order to ” surge the border” when he assumes the oath.
The world has always been filled with poverty-stricken, desolated nations. The current state of affairs of South America, for example, isn't unique. There's no significant driving force in the present that wasn't there 10 years ago. What's changed is that we now have the president make an issue of border security based on partisan motives. If you can basically create a massive billboard that tells illegal aliens to keep coming into the country, it should come as little surprise when they walk into the country.
The only way to fix this is having a leadership team in Washington who considers the issue seriously and will make difficult decisions to stem the flow. The only thing we can expect from the Biden administration is constant ranting over the media coverage.
