Since Elon Musk assumed control of Twitter, the left has been going through some trauma. Ever since it became clear that Musk’s acquisition of the social media giant was likely to be completed, the left has been screaming and ranting about the horrible issues that would be coming onto the site.
Many prominent leftist influencers believe that Musk's emphasis on freedom of speech is only going to lead to more slander and bigotry propagated on the website. However, in real life, they appear to be more frightened by the idea that those who have views that are different than their own may be on an equal playing field in the realm of expressing opinions.
On Wednesday, Musk posted a survey asking if Twitter should offer “a general amnesty” to any accounts that have been restricted or suspended: “Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?”
Responding to a tweet that said Twitter “should be clear and consistent about its rules and penalties for breaking them,” he said that as he discovers more about the operations of Twitter, he uncovers more troubling details. He wrote: “The more I learn, the worse it gets. The world should know the truth of what has been happening at Twitter. Transparency will earn the trust of the people.”
On Tuesday, Musk posted a tweet acknowledging that during the previous administration, the most prominent left-wing websites were not forever banned, even though they were “spouting utter lies.” He stated, “As is obvious to all but the media, there is not one permanent ban on even the most far left account spouting utter lies.”
Remember what happened after Musk conducted an online poll on Twitter? In the following days, he reinstated former President Donald Trump’s account, triggering more crying and gnashing of teeth from liberals. It could be a hint that he's planning to let thousands of banned users out of Twitter prison in the near future.
It's evident that Musk is determined to clean out the Twitter platform, despite the left’s constant complaining. In fact, they're whining. Media activist Taylor Lorenz of the Washington Post, in an appearance on BBC News, claimed the new Twitter CEO is in fact anti-free speech. She claimed, “Well, there’s absolutely nothing about Elon Musk that’s a free speech advocate. I mean, he’s just notoriously been super anti-free speech over the years, cracking down on anybody that speaks out against him. He’s intimidated journalists, he’s intimidated whistleblowers, and now you see him on Twitter once again just cracking down super hard on any sort of open expression and free speech. Just today, he said that any posts that were deemed negative, without even explaining what that means, would be throttled, and it would be basically impossible to find on Twitter. So he will really go to insane lengths to silence people, and to kind of get them to shut up.”
You might be surprised to learn that she did not provide any evidence to back her claims regarding Musk’s restriction of freedom of speech. However, this is the exact kind of filth being propagated by other leftist influencers who are frustrated with the concept of having to face an open contest of ideas. If the CEO's recent changes are an indication of things to come, they'd better prepare.
