Nursing Students at SUNY Are Learning About Human Anatomy by Studying the “Mx. Genderbread Person”

Get out and run—and as quickly as you can; it's tough keeping up with social advancement.

An example: at the State University of New York (SUNY), the College at Brockport’s nursing school is training young men and women through the use of progressive pastry. The college offers “NUR 342: Foundations for Professional Practice for Nursing.” In this instance, being a professional entails correct pronoun use.

Here's how the course is described: “Co-requisite: NUR 343 (must be taken concurrently). Presents both the skills and theoretical basis for professional practice in nursing with an emphasis on a systems approach and patient safety. Introduces the components and use of the nursing process and basic nursing techniques, national safety goals and adults’ reaction to illness and hospitalization. 3 Cr. Fall.”

Campus Reform reported that diagrams used in the course depicted “The Genderbread Person.” A cartoon shows a smiling yellow cookie with a rainbow-streaked head. Its body radiates “expression,” its heart is full of “attraction,” and its mind is home to “identity.”

As per the picture, “Gender Identity” can be female or male. Similar to that, “Gender Expression” may be feminine or masculine. For “Biological Sex,” the choices are “femaleness” or “maleness.”

It's not the expressive dessert's first time going to college. Cross out Mr. Genderbread Man and Ms. Genderbread Woman. Mx. Genderbread Person’s ideology is everywhere in America, as can be seen in recent headlines: “High School Biology Class Tells Kids Biological Sex Is a Social Construct,” “Miss America Organization Crowns Its First Biologically Male Queen,” “Miss France Welcomes Biologically Male Contestant, ‘a Candidate Like the Others’,” ”Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Features Its First Transgender Model, Who ‘Embodies the Well-Rounded Woman’,” “Biology class at high school teaches that biological sex is an expression of social class,” “With the Help of a Unicorn, College Students Are Schooled on Which Restroom to Use,” “Out to Pasture, Gender Unicorn—the University of Arkansas Serves Sweeter Sex Ed.”

Returning to the nursing school and Mx. Genderbread Person, some students may consider this course based on yeast to be unusual in a field that is rooted in biology. Campus Reform discovered exactly such a participant:

“A student in the course, who requested to remain anonymous, told Campus Reform that the diagram was ‘a little biased and ridiculous’ since ‘nursing is a career based in science.’

“‘It all just seems contraindicated to be educating us on the gender-bread person with the list [of] ongoing terms that aren’t backed with science at all,’ the student said.

“‘It’s just feeding into the idea that we can make up all these terms, and we are all just supposed to go with it,’ the student continued. ‘Taking nursing classes and finally being accepted into the program, I was really looking forward to taking courses about patient care and such, when it just feels like my required women studies gen ed all over again.’”

Social change usually happens slowly. However, lately, it seems to be roaring thunder riding on lightning. The rapid changes raise questions such as: If those who are at the forefront of gender-based identity movements are aware that gender is a social construct, why can't they simply stop constructing it? If they want to continue building, why build on sexuality? Today, gender revolutionaries seem to have left the confines of the binary system of sex to take refuge in the limitations of identity's binary system. Maybe we'll soon get past the whole thing. At present, the options are mainly male or female, but you're able to choose from the options regarding your expression, appeal, and personal identity.

Traditionalists may not be keen on societal change; however, that's how the cookie crumbles.
