Cambridge Dictionary Surrenders to Transactivists by Altering the Definitions of “Man” and “Woman”

The dictionary was the first place to turn in order to learn a word’s meaning or for help in winning at Scrabble. Today, at least one of those items has been removed, at least in Cambridge Dictionary.

Cambridge Dictionary changed the definitions of man and woman into ones considered true by only a small number of transactivists and their supporters. Contrary to the traditional term, man now comprises: “An adult who lives and identifies as male though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.”

Follow some examples of the word employed in a sentence, such as: “Mark is a trans man (= a man who was said to be female when they were born).” The fact that this particular example includes references to a medical professional is very interesting.

The definition of woman follows much in the same vein. However, in the examples, the editors included this: “She was the first trans woman elected to a national office.”

If it isn't evident that these usage examples weren’t written by activists, it’s not certain what else you'd need as proof.

Even if the examples weren't created by activists, the results are the same. Cambridge Dictionary has embraced the idea that words can mean whatever they want them to mean, in the process rendering the definitions of words completely meaningless. If there is no actual definition, what's the purpose of purchasing a dictionary or even using one with serious intent?

Cambridge Dictionary has effectively renounced its status as an authority in defining words, making websites such as Urban Dictionary just as, if not more, reliable in the sense that it has not claimed to be the absolute authority on word definitions. However, the reality, regardless of how you look at it, is that man and woman are a pair of words with very specific definitions. Man refers to a male adult human being; woman to a female adult human being. It's that simple. There's no need for more than this. If they really cared about real definitions, they'd include trans-man and trans-woman. However, they did not. They went for the actual words in the hope of helping transgender activists control the language. After all, if you don’t control the language, you don’t control the conversation.
