After China Encroaches on Taiwan’s Territory, the Latter Triggers Its Military Defense System, Demonstrating the Rising Tensions

The situation could be getting heated on the streets of Taiwan after the Ministry of National Defense expressed concerns over more than a dozen Chinese naval vessels and military aircraft approaching Taiwan in the early hours of Saturday, according to a report by Fox News.

This prompted the island defense team to deploy fighter jets into the air and activate their anti-missile defense systems.

“’11 PLA aircraft and 3 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m. today,’ the government announced, prompting officials to dispatch naval vessels of their own and prepare to deploy land-based missile systems ‘to respond to these activities.’”

The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) also had forces near Taiwan on both Wednesday and Thursday.

“‘[Nine] PLA aircraft and 3 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m.(UTC+8) today. R.O.C. Armed Forces have monitored the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond to these activities,’ its government said.

“Taiwan’s Defense Ministry added: ‘2 of the detected aircraft (BZK-005 UAV RECCE and Y-8 ASW) had entered Taiwan’s southwest ADIZ, flight paths as illustrated.’

“The sighting on Wednesday was the largest, with Taiwan reporting seeing 39 Chinese aircraft and three naval vessels around the island. The instance also prompted an immediate response from Taiwan’s military.

“Of the detected aircraft, 30 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s southwest and southeast Air Defense Identification Zone.”

It appears as if China is testing the island's defenses. This raises the question of whether they're preparing for an attack. If they decide to invade the island, this would raise the question of how the United States would respond.

The official strategy of the U.S. is to be unclear about what we would do. President Joe Biden has said that the U.S. would respond by having troops defend Taiwan; however, he has stated that he does not believe that China will invade Taiwan in the near future. Since so much defense money has been poured into Ukraine, China may think that now is the right time to strike Taiwan, as we would be unable to afford to give Taiwan any aid.

China has become more aggressive in its attitude since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited the island in August. The White House showed a weak response to threats made against Pelosi at the time. Pelosi was threatened by the Chinese, who warned that they would shoot her out of the sky, and the White House didn't even condemn this rhetoric. National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby even stated that they aren't in favor of Taiwan's independence. Talk about being weak when you display this kind of attitude toward the Chinese. They may believe that they can threaten the island because of our poor and lukewarm response, and we won't react. It's not the most effective face to show them. They respect only strength, and unfortunately, strength is not Joe Biden.
