On Friday afternoon, following the U.S. Senate's treason, the Republicans of the United States House of Representatives did what has unfortunately become the norm in recent times in Washington, D.C.: They gave in to the demands of the lame-ducks and others in the Democratic Party and helped pass the massive omnibus bill into law.
There was one skeptic on the Democratic side who did vote “no” on the spending bill that had been endorsed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and President Joe Biden (D). New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) voted “no.”
RedState’s Nick Arama reported on the final vote of the lower chamber:
“Now the $1.7 trillion monstrosity just passed the House, 225-201.
“The Democrats voted for it except for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) who voted ‘no’ and Rep. Rashida Tlaib who voted ‘present.’”
However, let's focus on AOC. One of the strands that got lost in the establishment's festive cheer in the wake of the bill's approval was the rationale behind why the congresswoman voted in the manner she did. PJ Media’s Ryan Ledendecker took up the breadcrumb trail and shared the self-important tweets of Ocasio-Cortez:
“[W]hy would she buck the Democratic Party’s last hurrah? Because besides all the stupid things the spending bill funds, it also happens to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Heaven forbid we fund the two agencies that actually need the extra funds to deal with the onslaught of illegals pouring across the border 24/7.”
The Hill covered the amount of increases as well as AOC's “reasons” for standing against the increases:
“The appropriations bill passed by Congress includes $8.42 billion for ICE, which is $161.1 million more than what was enacted in 2022 and $319.4 million more than what the president requested.
“DHS received $86.5 billion in discretionary resources.
“Ocasio-Cortez said the ‘dramatic increase’ in spending for those two agencies ‘cut[s] against the promises our party has made to immigrant communities across the country,’ adding that it is the case ‘especially in light of the lack of progress on DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals], TPS [Temporary Protected Status], and expanding paths to citizenship.’”
However, because this is AOC, she's bound to stumble at some point. There was the joyful message to her supporters and the wider neo-socialist populace that unions and her district could get some treats in their stockings at the hands of Democrats this Christmas after all.
“The congresswoman touted provisions included in the omnibus that she helped craft, including an increase in the National Labor Relations Board and funding for community projects in her district, but said she could not vote for them because of her overarching concerns with the bill.”
Isn't that fantastic? You could complain that the funds that should be going towards securing our borders (something that congressmen and congresswomen swear to protect) while AOC leaps for joy over more money going to her union buddies and (we’re not making this up) putting on the table pieces of legislation that aren't needed, such as the “Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.”
When you're on the left, you're able to go both ways at once. It's Christmas!
