The Governor’s Equity Summit Held in Washington State Equates Individualism with White Supremacy and Racism

Do you identify as an individual? In other words, are you an avowed white supremacist? If you're a fan of the recent presentation by Washington Democratic Governor Jay Inslee, it seems that your only choices are to follow the crowd or become an unintentionally white racist, even if you're black.

According to Fox News, Jay held the 2022 Governor's Equity Summit late last month in Tacoma. In the course of the event, the executive director of the state's Professional Educator Standards Board presented a PowerPoint slide presentation titled “Internal Transformation: How an Education Agency is Transforming Itself in the Name of Justice.”

One slide raised a difficult question:

“What does it look like when we move away from white supremacy culture toward indigenous relational pedagogy? What can you do tomorrow?”

The presentation then referred to “aspects of white supremacy culture.”

A rundown of lousy Caucasian traits:

  • Perfectionism
  • Sense of Urgency
  • Defensiveness
  • Quantity Over Quality
  • Worship of the Written Word
  • Paternalism
  • Either/Or Thinking
  • Power Hoarding
  • Fear of Open Conflict
  • Progress is Bigger, More
  • Right to Comfort

But the two most dangerous are:

  • Objectivity
  • Individualism

Between objectivity and individualism – it's possible to refer to them as objectivity and subjectivity – It doesn't appear that there's much space left.

The lesson nevertheless uncovered superior qualities among American Indians.

“Aspects of indigenous relational pedagogy”:

  • Ethical Usefulness
  • Collective (Prioritized Over the Individual)
  • Visiting
  • Perception
  • Slowness and Deliberateness
  • Consistency and Dependability
  • Honor, Integrity, and Honesty
  • Noninterference
  • Orality
  • Generosity
  • Humility and Gentleness
  • Responsibility and Reciprocity
  • Relationship

The description of the KKK's (Klu Klux Klan’s) view of the world isn't too far off from that of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History & Culture. In 2020, the museum analyzed the particularities of the People of the Pale:

  • Rugged Individualism
  • The Nuclear Family; Father, Mother, 2.3 Children is the Ideal Social Unit
  • Objective, Rational Linear Thinking
  • Hard work is the key to success
  • Christianity is the Norm
  • Respect Authority
  • Plan for Future
  • Delayed Gratification
  • Action Orientation
  • Decision-Making
  • Be Polite

There's certainly a bit of “indigenous” overlap.

In any case, these days, whiteness is anything but the ultimate: “College Op-Ed Asks if White People Should Be Kicked out of Parties,” “Tufts University Hosts ‘Unpacking Whiteness’ Program, Declares the ‘Game Is Rigged’,” “Tennessee University Segregates Students for ‘Antiracism’ Training, Hails the Absence of White People as ‘Magical’,” “Mental Health Journal’s Article on ‘Parasitic Whiteness’ Laments There’s ‘Not Yet a Permanent Cure’,” “UC Berkeley Professor Told Students Abolishing Whiteness Means Wiping out White People,” “Yale Medical School Welcomes Psychiatrist Who Dreams of ‘Unloading a Revolver Into the Head of Any White Person’.”

The Washington State conference clearly favored American Indians–who are, in a curious way, not “indigenous” to America—to the individualistic white supremacists. Therefore, it began with a Land Acknowledgement that praised “the original inhabitants of the spaces we occupy.” This was then followed by a “moment of silence” for “members of our Black and Asian communities, and other communities of color” who “continue to experience racism through police brutality, mass incarceration, inequitable education and health services, deportation, and other forms of subjugation.”

At the conclusion of this event, it was clear that the wicked world was the same as it was before, because it was, after all, just a conference.

Let’s hope that we can get these urgent problems addressed without in any way being individuals. The main figure in the fight was Governor Jay Inslee, who is white and who apparently ran as a candidate on the basis that he was, at a minimum, the ideal individual to do the job.
