Political commentator Geraldo Rivera has said a number of embarrassing things throughout his life. Most of it stemmed from the fact that he didn't know enough about the subject matter he was discussing at the time.
However, he strayed over the edge on Tuesday's The Five when he made a statement against AR-15s, describing them as “machine guns” and automatic rifles and saying that the “AR” in “AR-15” stood for “automatic rifle.”
He left host Greg Gutfeld flabbergasted, who had to inform him that “no, that's not what it is.”
However, Geraldo continued to fall apart and was furious that anyone dared challenge him on his choice of words.
“Heard the Daily Caller and fellow travelers are ranting about my incorrect definition on-air of ‘AR' as in AR-15,” Rivera said. “Whatever. Point is, there is no place (other than sporting clubs and similar skilled settings) for assault rifles. They’re substitute appendages.”
It is an indication of his character when it's impossible for him to just wear the “L” and admit that he's wrong. “Whatever” is how he's been pursuing “journalism.” If you do not care about accuracy, then who should listen to you? Sure, everyone makes mistakes. However, when they're mistaken, they must acknowledge it instead of trying to justify their errors. Perhaps if he were to admit that he was mistaken in regards to the AR-15 and that it is not an automatic or a machine gun, he would discover what it actually is—it's one of the most sought-after rifles in America. It's hard to accept his claim that it doesn't belong “other than [in] sporting clubs and similar skilled settings,” referring to it as an “assault rifle.” That statement also suggests that he doesn’t know what he's talking about. It’s a good bet that he would be a bit unsure of how to clarify those remarks. It's a semi-automatic rifle that shoots one bullet per pull of the trigger, Geraldo, not a machine gun.
Alongside the need to be educated regarding guns, Geraldo should be educated about our Constitution and that section stating that certain rights “shall not be infringed.” It's not saying it's okay to violate the rights of others to bear arms, even if Geraldo is emotionally disturbed by gun owners.
It's more than a bit hilarious when Geraldo discusses “substitute appendages.” Um, did he check the banner on his Twitter profile recently?
What happens when a woman owns an AR-15? It's likely that Geraldo doesn't realize that a large number of AR-15 users are female. Is Geraldo being anti-trans when he argues against “substitute appendages”?
Seriously, Geraldo, get one of your conservative buddies to educate you on guns so you don't appear ignorant, and you'll learn something. The liberal media is full of individuals who are ignorant about the issue. If you're going to discuss gun issues, make sure you have some basic information.
